Seventh Annual “Let’s Get Squished” Breast Cancer Awareness 5K Walk/Run Expands with Movie Matinee

Glendive will be swirling with pink on September 30th as the seventh annual Glendive Medical Center (GMC) “Let’s Get Squished” Breast Cancer Awareness 5K Walk/Run commences at Makoshika State Park. The event kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness Month and has expanded to include a movie matinee at the Rose Theatre in the afternoon and an online silent auction through GMC Facebook page.

The event has a dual purpose: First, to raise awareness for early breast cancer detection, including scheduling your mammogram. A screening mammogram is led by the patient. Patients who do not suspect any issues, can call 406-345-3330 to schedule this type of mammogram. A diagnostic mammogram must be ordered by a provider if a patient suspects any concerning changes in breast tissue. Appointments can be made for this type of mammogram by calling 406-345-8901.

Secondly, this event raises money for “comfort baskets” for patients who have been diagnosed with, or receiving treatment for, breast cancer at Glendive Medical Center. GMC event coordinators are hoping to raise $3,500 for the baskets at this year’s event.

“Last year, participants of Let’s Get Squished helped us provide twelve comfort baskets to patients diagnosed with breast cancer at GMC,” stated Jaime Shanks, Foundation & Marketing Director, “the baskets are carefully put together by our chemotherapy and radiology teams to include items that are not only necessary for treatment, but also provide encouragement. There are many emotional tears shed when a patient receives one of these thoughtful baskets.”

The 5K Walk/Run will begin at Makoshika State Park Pavilion on the morning of September 30th. Check-in is at 8am and the walk/run begins at 9am. The cost for the race is $30 and participants are encouraged to sign up online through EventBrite or at the Foundation/Marketing house. Participants can register up until the day of the event, however, shirts are not guaranteed if registration is after September 10th. If anyone would like to be timed for the race, please make a note of that when registering. A special thanks to Makoshika Wellness for donating their time and equipment for timing race participants. Times will be provided on GMC Facebook and in the newspaper following the race.

New this year is a movie matinee. The movie, “My Big, Fat Greek Wedding” will be shown at the Rose Theatre beginning at 1pm. Tickets are $5/each and must be purchased in advance online or at the Foundation/Marketing house. Tickets are limited to 80 seats so early registration is encouraged. One popcorn and one water are included with each ticket.

An online silent auction through GMC Facebook page will also help with the fundraising efforts. Donations are being gathered through the Marketing/Foundation office until September 28th. Donors’ names and business logos will be added to the back of the t-shirts if received by September 10th.

To purchase tickets online, visit EventBrite and search “Let’s Get Squished”. To purchase in person, please visit the GMC Foundation/Marketing house at 202 West Ames Wye between 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday. For information on donating or tickets, please call Katrina Nissley at 406-345-8996.
