Ultrasound

Ultrasound is the use of sound waves to obtain images of organs and tissues in the body. During an ultrasound examination, the sonographer (ultrasound technologist) places a transducer in contact with the patient's body. It emits high-frequency sound waves that pass through the body, sending back "echoes" as they bounce off organs and tissues. Special computer equipment converts those echoes into visual data.

Ultrasound is used for many reasons, including to:

  • View the uterus and ovaries during pregnancy and monitor the developing baby's health
  • Diagnose gallbladder disease
  • Evaluate blood flow
  • Guide a needle for biopsy or tumor treatment
  • Examine a breast lump
  • Check the thyroid gland
  • Find genital and prostate problems
  • Assess joint inflammation (synovitis)
  • Evaluate metabolic bone disease
